“This berry is the wonder of all fruits growing naturally in these parts. It is of itself excellent; so that one of the chiefest doctors of England was wont to say, that God could have made, but God never did make, a better berry. In some parts where the Indians have planted, I have many times seen as many as would fill a good ship, within a few miles compass”, 1643 Roger Williams (founder of Rhode Island and champion of religious freedom for the Narragansett Indians). This is the most familiar and appreciated of all native fruits. From a horticultural perspective, their size and yields are needed for commercial use, but the small-berried wild ones have a much more pronounced and full flavor. So they are a little small-they are big on flavor. As a result, they have a following all of their own. Do these taste like the wild ones? They are the wild ones!
