This is one of the most widely used fruits in the world cultivated for centuries for its use as for jelly, juice and lovely fragrance. Its origins go back to Iran, Turkestan and Saudi Arabia. Today it is grown for its fruit pulp which is stewed, baked, made into jellies and jams and mixed with other fruits to help "set" or thicken a mixture. Even the flowers are edible. Quinces have been used to treat sore throats and improve circulation to relieve rheumatic conditions. The seeds are used to make a gum for stabilizing ice cream. They produce thick clear syrup by the compounds surrounding the seed. We use seed from the old variety Creech Prolific from Connecticut. Fruits remain hard even when fully ripe. Considered indispensible on many a farm homestead in the ‘old’ days. Self fertile plants are pollinated by bees. Fast growing. Height to 12 ft. by 12 ft.wide. Can be pruned as a tree but is usually is more shrub like. Full sun.
