Upright thorny shrub with dense short spur type branches. From Central China this species is used like the common quince including the making of candy and for pickling. Not well known this species has grown well in Michigan and is a nice ornamental as well despite its prickly fruit spurs. Bright pink flowers in early spring. No problems with fireblight. Our Ecos selection is from three seedling selections that have withstood our winters here without any winter damage. Original seed came from Great Britain. Fruit production is medium and the fruit varies from 2-4 inches in diameter. One of the hardest fruits in our orchard, this species can be used to set or gel other fruits when cooking. Mild flavor. Self fertile. Height 8 ft. by 2-3 ft. wide.
