European Hybrid Chestnut — Castanea sativa x mollissima
Large Attractive Nuts-Excellent Productivity
We started using selections from these crosses because of their high yields and large nut size. These are a mix of different crosses all of which show excellent resistance to blight and have naturally wide crotch angles which support the heavy load of nuts without damage to the tree. From this hybrid, growers often find small precocious 3 to 4 year old plants flowering. This cross has the largest and most attractive nuts of anything we have in our planting. Even the leaves are larger with seedling trees show excellent vigor. Mature trees look like a standard apple tree. Strains like this one are frequently used in the commercial production of chestnuts in China and Europe. Many of ours have their background from British Columbia from nurseryman J.U. Gellatly in the early 1900’s. Height to 50 ft. with equal spread.
