American Hybrid Chestnut — Castanea dentata x mollissima
Diverse Hybrid Progeny---Resistant to Chestnut Blight-Sweet Tasting Nuts
Developed by using the widest variety of types found within the Douglass hybrids originally from upstate New York. Combines the fast growth, upright habit of the American with the blight resistance of the Chinese.
The American chestnut tree once covered over 200 million acres from the Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian border. When blight was accidentally introduced in the early 1900’s, it is estimated that over 3.5 billion trees died as a result of this epidemic-an inherent weakness in the American chestnut. However, some trees survived and ‘backyard’ inventors used these in breeding projects as a way to create a tree resistant or even immune to the blight. Such was the case for Earl Douglass. We began growing thousands of his crosses for other mail order companies in the early 1980’s eventually making selections from our seed beds to start our own orchard. Today we manage our seed orchards by removing the damaged blighted trees while adding more resistant trees with the greatest vigor. Even with our rather freewheeling attitude on breeding techniques we have found only a small percentage(less than 10%) are needed to be removed. We believe our seedlings will prove even more resistant. We have noticed many of these seedlings begin fruiting when only 4 to 6 years old. Nut size varies from small to medium. The flavor is sweet with no astringency, even when eaten fresh from the tree. Height to 60 ft. with a 20-50 ft. width.
