Wildlife Pear- Excellent mast tree for deer and fruit producer for birds
This is a new generation of pear crosses grown specifically to attract wildlife. The sizes and types of fruits vary from round to pear shaped from 1 to 3 inches in size. Some weigh up to 12 ounces each. The quantities produced are the highest of all pear trees. All types of birds and deer consume the fruit starting in August ending in November. The fruit quality is only marginal for human consumption but a few of the larger fruited seedlings can be eaten fresh or used for sauces and jam. The tart flavor is unusual for a pear. The large selections seem to have the most potential for deer feed and the small fruited ones for songbirds and turkey. Deer don’t seem too attractive to the plant itself and the fruit spurs repel them from eating the foliage. Fragrant 1-inch white blossoms clothe the tree in late April. Vigorous growth, often reaching 6 feet in 2-3 years. Fruiting begins in 4-6 years from seed. This cross is due in part to a plant explorer by the name of Walter Koelz, who worked for the USDA. We used one tree for seed to create our seed orchard over 25 years ago. These crosses originated as open pollinated seedlings that show the immense diversity of the pear genus. The original source was from his trip to Persia. Tolerant to almost every soil type except wet. Height to 30-50 ft. with a 15-30 ft. width.
Select: Grown from very large fruited types with good quality fruit. Close to the Asian pear side of its genetics like the parent source. Worthwhile growing to develop a larger fruiting edible strain for people too.
